The old Moulin de la Galette, a countrified, open-air dance-hall and cafĂ© combined, was the favorite place of amusement of the young people of Montmartre in days gone by, when it was still a straggling village on the outskirts of Paris. Renoir was just the man to paint these smiling, carefree couples waltzing with abandon, the pretty girls and their handsome young men in straw hats. The vibrancy of life itself plays among all these figures, bathed as they are in mellow, flickering patches of sun and shadow. This is one of Renoir’s finest achievements in the way of capturing atmospheric light. He brings it off, however, not by using the distinct, impressionist brushstroke, but by the smooth blending of colors that suited him best.
