Renoir - Portrait

Renoir best portraits are not especially his likenesses of bankers, stockbrokers, publishers, or their wives, but those of their children. He possessed a wonderful sensitivity for his youngest sitters. Works like the regal “Mademoiselle Romaine Lacaux” (1864), the enchanting “Mademoiselle Legrand” (1875), the wide-eyed and wild-haired “Margot Berard” (1879) and her intensely focused sister “Lucie Berard” (1883) are marvelous paintings that are in no way saccharine or sentimental. With his keen feeling for the atmospheric light playing over people and things, it was only natural for Renoir to embrace Impressionism.
