The Umbrellas, painted about 1883 or perhaps even slightly earlier, is a transition work. Although we cannot help feeling a measure of harshness here and there, most noticeable in the left foreground figure and the umbrellas, at the same time much else owes an unmistakable debt to Impressionism. The entire righthand group, for example, with the two children and the fondly smiling woman beside them, is quite devoid of any coldness.
